A Dublin Week

This week's been nice. Yes, nice.

I had monday to wednesday off. This was 100% due to the fact that my boss is a complete idiot and, let's face it, also a complete dickhead. I wrote down that i couldn't work monday the 21st to thursday the 24th, giving him a week's notice. Apparently this was too confusing for the old fellow and he gave me monday the 14th to thursday the 17th off. I have since been told, by him, that it doesnt help to give him notice and that it is easiest if i just tell him the day before i leave that i am unavailable. okaaaay.

So this is what i did with my time:


MONDAY

Went out to Kilmainham Jail on Monday with Mon and our visitor, Ant's friend Dominique.
This is a ghostly old jail with a grim past. It was used to incarcerate way too many men, women and children during the famine years (many of whom preferred being there to being on the outside - at least they got fed once a day inside). It was also used to temporarily hold many prisoners who were to be shipped off to such horrid ends of the earth as GASP! Australia! Later, it was the last home of many republicans during the war of independence, and fighters from both sides during the civil war. However, it is most famous for being the execution site of many of the founders of the 1916 Proclamation - you can see the exact spot where many of the signatories of the declaration were shot. The general public was not supportive of total independence up until this point, but when they heard about the executions they began to change their minds, and the course of Irish history. My inner history nerd was released!!

Heaps of movies have been shot in this jail too. The most memorable (well, for us anyway, since we watched it about a month ago) was In The Name of the Father. Our tour ended in the main block of the jail, where the majority of the jail scenes were shot.


MONDAY NIGHT

Tex Perkins and Tim Rogers concert!

Woooo!

An ace ace ace gig. Why the hell has it taken these two troubadors so long to team up? Their new TNT songs were really great, plus they played 'Heavy Heart', 'Damage', 'This is Not the Way Home' and a brilliant, eye-opening cover of Rod Stewart's classic homage to Paedophilia, 'Tonight's the Night'.

After the gig Mon got a roadie to give us the untouched bottle of red wine that the two alco singers had left on stage, and i stole a kettle from backstage. It's brand new. And we didn't have one so it was actually a useful moment of kleptomania.

TUESDAY

Umm what did i do on tuesday. i forget. must have been something amazing. Oh yeh i went to bookshops. Then at night Mon and I went to see this new movie..it's called Taxi Driver..Robert DeNiro is in it...it's alright. We saw it for free at the cinema at my work. We've seen Little Fish there before, and they're showing Look Both Ways soon.

Later Me, Ant and Dom went to a new indie night. It was ok but very emo.

Speaking of emo, there are a hell of a lot of little emos in Dublin. There's even a petrol station here called emo, in homage to them all.

WEDNESDAY

I slept and did stuff. Went to a photo exhibition. Had toast for dinner. A really good day.

THURSDAY

Got rudely awoken by the feisty Renee at Julia Ross agency with a job offer for the day. Went and sat in a self-contained little reception area and answered the phones for Loreal Luxury Products all day. Pretty crap job, especially since Loreal has blocked Yahoo and blogger.

FRIDAY

Worked for crappy Loreal again. Got myself a tea, having been told to 'help myself to tea and coffee in the kitchen', then as i returned to my desk was promptly lectured about not leaving the reception area under any circumstances. CRAZY LADY HOW AM I MEANT TO HELP MYSELF TO TEA WITHOUT LEAVING THE DESK? The phone hadnt rung for about 15 mins anyway. Aaaah self-important company staff. Gotta love 'em. They make us feel better about ourselves.

Made a new friend at work though! Matt, a really sweet Aussie gay guy from Armidale who studied journalism in Queensland and has moved here with his parents. We're going to take him out next weekend.

FRIDAY NIGHT

Worked my normal job for the night. Yup, a 16 hour day, what is this, December last year???

Met the girls after work at the same indie club from Tuesday night. As i had to pay to get in i made sure they were going to be staying for a while. 'Yeh! Yeh we're gonna be out for hours' was roughly the response. Half an hour later...home time of course!

SATURDAY

Exhausted, the highlight of the day was buying blueberry scones at the markets.
Worked Satdy night with most of my favourites.

SUNDAY

The highlight was my timely call from Erica! Just when i was up and feeling sickly
(cough cough splutter splutter) she called. YAY thanks Ez!

Will work tonight til maybe midnight, then get up at 4am and FLY TO FRANCE!!!
