ME on top of one of the hills created when the rubble of post-war Berlin was sorted.
Inside the Pergamom Museum. Next time you're in Turkey, why not steal an entire ancient street and transport it to your city?
Lucy the drunkard and me.
Memorial to Peter Fechter, 18 year old who was shot by Eastern soldiers as he tried to jump the wall in 1962. He lay bleeding to death in 'No Man's Land', with the Western soldiers looking on but 'unable' to help as he was technically on Eastern land. Nasty. There are memorials and stories like this EVERYWHERE.
Gleis 17, GrunewaldPlatform 17 at Grunewald S Bahn station. Michael (my trusty tour guide!!) showed this to me. The station seems completely normal from the regular platforms but if you go through the tunnel you see a sign for platform 17....very weird as the station is small and only has 5 or so platforms...if you go up the stairs you find this simple and beautiful memorial the Berlin victims of Nzi persecution who were sent from this exact platform to Auschwitz, Theresianstadt, Riga etc. The tracks lead to nowhere now, and they have left the platforms as they were, with the only addition being a line of brass plaques with the dates, number of prisoners and destination for each day that people were deported between 1941 and 1945.
HUGE THANKS TO MICHAEL, ANDREA AND LUCY FOR HAVING ME AND SHOWING ME THE REAL BERLIN!!!!!!
