It's true, all the rumours you have heard, read and seen are to be believed.
We won a game of soccer yesterday.
And it wasn't even because the other team were forced to forfeit due to not having enough players. We scored goals. More goals than they scored.
The final score was 2-1. We scored the first two - a beautiful high-kick arch over the goaly's head by Bec and a bit of fancy footworking flash by Matt - in the first 6 minutes. Bec nearly got about another three...not bad considering she was nearly too ill to play!
Disco Dave, our star goalie with the biggest chops this side of the Alice Springs Plaza Butchers, saved the day numerous times, most notably with his signature move which involves sliding down onto his knees and stopping the ball with the impressive might of his groin. The game paused for a few minutes after that one for Dave to recover.
An injury early in the second half took one of our star players, Sal, off with a mild case of concussion. I also got an insignificant graze on my right elbow.
Based on yesterday's performance our training regime has been revised. In addition to thursday afternoon scratch matches we will now be meeting at midnight on Saturdays at the local, or in the bush somewhere, for some intensive drinking in preparation for each Sunday match.
What makes this newfound and altogether unexpected glory all the sweeter is the fact that the opposition, 'UFOs', are all american spies from Pine Gap. They are good fun team though, not aggro like most of the teams who seem to forget we are playing C grade in Alice Springs.
