Today the BBC reports that Duch, the most notorious of five Khmer Rouge suspects being investigated by a UN-backed tribunal in Cambodia, has been charged with crimes against humanity.
Duch ran Tuol Sleng Prison, aka S21, the high school in central Phnom Penh which was turned into a horrific jail where more than 17, 000 men, women and children are thought to have been imprisoned, many of them brutally tortured and murdered.
S21 is now a haunted and deeply depressing museum. Prisoner's beds are still in some rooms, remnants of clothing remain in the stairwells, and blood stains are visible on the floor.
Despite being situated amongst major roads in the Cambodian capital, the grounds of S21 are eerily quiet, save for some bird calls.
