I've been warned about wearing birkenstocks in Alice Springs.
Apparently, they indicate that you are a member of an elite club...of lesbians!
There is a very significant lesbian scene here in the centre. No one really knows why.
A friend warned me about the shoes being a secret sign of sexuality a while ago. Since then I have noticed a huge amount fo straight people wearing birkenstocks, and have in fact bought another pair (one for winter, one for summer!). They are possibly the best, most practical shoes in the history of the universe. I used to hate them. But then i bought a pair for travelling last year and I am now a convert. Great for scaling walls, great for walking through wee on Asian toilet floors, great for climbing ancient monuments, and now, great for riding red bikes in Alice.

They are cool birkos.... a guy at my work has birkos and linen pants, and i recently found out his name full name is not Benjamin but Benedict, hehehe benedict.

y'know what? perhaps it is the subtle differences between different Birko styles. for instance, the presence of a buckle may be indicative of one's sexuality? i'm not going attempt to categorise, but just a thought?
